About Alexis Kienlen
I'm a poet, fiction writer, journalist and editor originally from Saskatoon, Saskatchewan. My first book, "She Dreams in Red" was published by Frontenac House in April 2007. My work has appeared in numerous publications including "Strike the Wok" (New Asian Canadian fiction - TSAR books 2004), "2000% Cracked Wheat" (Coteau Books), The Ottawa Citizen, Broken Pencil, Prairie Fire, and The Western Producer. I have received 10 writing related awards. From 2001-2006, I served as the Literary Editor for Ricepaper magazine, a Vancouver based quarterly that celebrates Asian Canadian art and culture.
I currently live in Edmonton, Alberta, where I am a reporter for Alberta Farmer, covering agricultural events and news for central Alberta. Fortunately I have time to work on my own fiction, poetry and journalism pieces as well. Each week, I write a weekly column about books for GP INK! a newspaper based in Grande Prairie, Alberta
I am a lifelong learner who believes in constantly challenging myself and developing new skills. I recently took a number of marketing classes from post-secondary institutes in British Columbia and am now pursuing a certificate in Food Security from Ryerson University.
From 1994-1998, I attended the University of Saskatchewan where I obtained an Honours degree in International Studies. My studies focussed on ethnic relations which has remained one of my primary areas of interest as I am of mixed ethnic heritage.
In 2001, I moved to Montreal, where I obtained a Graduate Diploma in Journalism at Concordia University. After this, I moved to Wainwright, Alberta, (pop 5300) where I worked as a reporter for The Wainwright Review. Following this, I spent some time living and working in Indonesia, Mongolia and Vancouver.
From January 2007 to July 2008, I worked at the Grande Prairie Daily Herald Tribune where I was the arts, lifestyle and agriculture writer. I am a member of PEN Canada, the Canadian Science Writers Association, the Saskatchewan Writers Guild, the Writers Guild of Alberta, and the Canadian Association of Journalists.
Areas of interest include literature (particularly Canadian and Asian Canadian), film, dance and yoga, the arts in general, Buddhism, agriculture, sustainable development, food security, the prairies, teenage culture, young adult literature, race relations, issues concerning social justice and ethnic identity, international development, and Asia (particularly China).
